How Humanity Touches Came to Be

Every mission has a moment it can be traced back to. For me, there are two.

1

The First Moment

I was still in my early childhood years when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. I didn't have the words for it then — I just knew that our house felt different, that the adults around me spoke in a quieter register, and that "the hospital" became a place we visited far more often than any child wants to.

What I remember most isn't the fear. It's the waiting rooms. The checkups. The strange rhythm of hope and dread that comes with every scan and every follow-up appointment. I watched my mother carry that rhythm for years — and in many ways, she still does. Every checkup, even now, is a small echo of that first diagnosis. It taught me early that illness doesn't just live in the body. It moves into a family's daily life and never fully leaves, even in remission, even in recovery.

Mental health and physical health are never separate stories. They are the same story, told from two angles.

The Second Moment

Fast forward to more recent years. My grandfather was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, and I found myself back in that same phase — older now, more aware, but no less affected. Watching him go through treatment brought everything full circle. The same fear. The same quiet strength. The same realization that the people going through treatment are rarely the only ones who need support — their families are fighting an invisible, parallel battle too.

The unspoken weight caregivers carry is where the idea for Humanity Touches truly took shape. A promise I made to my younger self in that first waiting room all those years ago.

Reflecting on the mission of Humanity Touches

Why Humanity Touches Exists

Humanity Touches was born from the belief that no one should have to navigate a diagnosis — their own or a loved one's — without support that sees the whole picture: the medical journey and the emotional one.

This organization exists to:

  • Normalize mental health conversations around chronic and serious illness, for patients and caregivers alike

  • Support families, not just patients, because a diagnosis touches every person in that orbit

  • Bridge the gap between clinical care and the emotional, human side of healing that too often gets left out of the conversation

  • Turn lived experience into resources — the kind I wish had existed for my family, both as a child and as an adult

Looking Forward

My mother's story and my grandfather's story are still being written. So is this one. Humanity Touches isn't the result of a single hardship — it's the result of watching the people I love face illness twice, a generation apart, and realizing that the emotional toll deserves just as much attention as the physical one.

This is why we do what we do. Not because the work is easy, but because someone, somewhere, is sitting in a waiting room right now — and they deserve to know they're not alone in it.
